A Coordinated Crackdown Across Physical and Online Markets

Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) announced that authorities seized more than 1.8 million counterfeit products across 512 enforcement cases between January and July 2026, representing an estimated 809 million baht in economic damage.

Working alongside the Royal Thai Police, Customs Department, and Department of Special Investigation, officials targeted counterfeit operations across the supply chain, from manufacturing facilities and import channels to warehouses, physical retailers, and online marketplaces.

Major raids uncovered counterfeit consumer goods including coffee, cocoa drinks, cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste, fabric softener, and motor oil, alongside fake watches, handbags, apparel, and jewelry sold in shopping centers and tourist destinations across Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Surat Thani.

The announcement also comes ahead of a public destruction event on September 10, where Thailand plans to destroy more than 2 million counterfeit goods from completed enforcement cases. That inventory extends beyond the 1.84 million items seized between January and July 2026, as it also includes counterfeit goods from earlier cases that had already been seized and were being held in government custody pending destruction.

Representatives from global brands, foreign embassies, and government agencies have been invited, showing that counterfeit enforcement is increasingly becoming a collaborative effort between governments and rights holders.

Online marketplaces accounted for 140 of the 512 cases, resulting in the seizure of more than 322,000 counterfeit products worth an estimated 104 million baht.

Online Counterfeits Continue to Demand Attention

While physical markets remain an important source of counterfeit goods, the latest figures show that online infringement continues to represent a significant portion of enforcement activity. More than one quarter of the reported cases originated online, illustrating how counterfeit sellers continue to use ecommerce marketplaces and digital channels to reach consumers.

As counterfeit operations become more distributed across platforms, identifying violations often becomes more difficult than removing an individual listing. Government agencies are responding by coordinating investigations across multiple organizations instead of pursuing isolated raids. Brands are increasingly expected to do the same.

What the Numbers Don't Show

The enforcement total says less about what is still in circulation, and nothing about how the operations behind the goods are organized.

The 512 cases are individual points of contact: a warehouse, a shipment, a storefront, and a listing. What connects them is harder to see. One counterfeit operation can make goods in one place, ship them from another, and sell across a dozen marketplaces, social accounts, and standalone websites, often under seller names that look unrelated. Stopping a shipment removes inventory. It usually does not show who ordered it or which other channels are still selling the same product.

The 1.84 million figure is a combined total from four agencies: the DIP, the Royal Thai Police, Customs, and the DSI, reporting data together. Brands face the same problem across platforms and countries, usually without a comparable channel for pooling what they find. Brands face the same challenge across platforms and countries, but their discoveries are often fragmented across different marketplaces, websites, and regions.

The Costs Behind the Damage Figure

The damage estimate attached to a seizure, 809 million baht in this case, is a figure for lost sales. It is the easiest cost to calculate and usually not the largest.

Most people who buy a counterfeit product think it is genuine. When it fails, the complaint, the return, and the review go to the real brand. In the categories covered by these seizures, including cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste, motor oil, and packaged drinks, there is also a safety question, because the brand has no idea what is in the product or where it was made.

Teams spend hours documenting listings, filing notices, and filing them again when the same seller returns under a new storefront. That work grows with the number of listings, not the number of sellers, which is how a team can stay busy for years without the underlying problem getting smaller.

What This Means for Brands: Enforcement Needs Better Intelligence

Government enforcement is important to combating counterfeiting, but public seizures only happen after infringement has already occurred.

Brands that rely solely on takedown requests or individual investigations often see the same sellers return under different storefronts or marketplaces. The organizations making the most progress are investing in continuous monitoring, connecting related infringement activity, and prioritizing enforcement against the largest counterfeit networks instead of isolated listings.

Removing 300 listings and identifying the six sellers behind them are different results.

Bottom Line

Thailand's figures show enforcement getting more coordinated, more public, and more focused on supply chains than on individual listings. The harder work for brands hasn't changed: knowing which sellers are behind the listings, and knowing it before the next round of numbers comes out.
